Chapter Fifteen
Nicolette
The deeper we trekked into the forest, the harder it became to walk. My tall husband even struggled. I panted and leaned against a tree. âHold on, I need a minute,â I gasped.
Daniel walked a few more steps ahead. He constantly kept his gaze moving from one tree to the next. We were sitting ducks. If someone wanted to hurt us, or heaven forbid kill us, we wouldnât stand a chance. That thought sent chills down my spine.
âWhy didnât we think of grabbing a weapon,â I mused when I reached Danielâs side. âWe need to go back.â
Daniel nodded. I was glad that he agreed with me. I took as deep a breath as I could. My heart raced. I could barely breathe. But I was desperate to get back inside the cabin where at least I had walls and doors to keep myself safe.
Then again, I didnât think we were safe anywhere.
I plodded along, my legs aching. At least, a trail had been trampled where weâd already walked. Daniel stayed behind me. He kept watch to ensure no one snuck up behind us.
By the time we made it back to the cabin, I was out of breath. My lungs burned from practically gulping the frigid air.
Stomping up the snow-covered steps, I burst into the cabin. No one greeted us. No voices. Nothing. I shouldnât have been surprised, but part of me hoped someone would make their way back unscathed.
âThis is ridiculous,â Daniel mumbled.
âIf Corey made it to town, the sheriff would already be here.â I didnât want to think the worst, but it was growing harder with every passing moment.
âI havenât seen a plow come through. Maybe the roads are impassable,â he stated with a shrug. âI mean, with how deep the snow around the cabin is, I canât imagine the roads are any better.â
I hadnât thought of that. It could take hours for someone to clear a path for the sheriff to get through. And how many plows did a town as small as Quiet have? I doubted they had many. Maybe it was even someone in a truck plowing through the snow.
Coat and snow pants hung beside the door, I ambled to the fireplace and held my hands out. I donât think I was ever this cold before. First my hands burned. Then the pins and needles sensation took over. I shivered even in the warmth of the fire.
Daniel shuffled up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. âSorry, babe. I know youâre cold, but if help doesnât come soon, weâre going to have to find our own way out of here.â
As much as I didnât want to hear it, I knew he was right. We couldnât stay here. Our friends were out there, possibly hurt or possibly dead. I wasnât willing to leave anyone behind if I could help it.
Daniel went into the kitchen and returned with a bottle of whiskey. I started to protest. I needed to keep all my senses sharp. But he poured a splash into one of the glasses he held in his other hand.
